Late Cretaceous Ridge Reorganization, Microplate Formation, and the Evolution of the Rio Grande Rise – Walvis Ridge Hot Spot Twins, South Atlantic Ocean

چکیده

Rio Grande Rise (RGR) and Walvis Ridge (WR) are South Atlantic large igneous provinces (LIPs), formed on the American African plates, respectively, mainly by volcanism from a hot spot erupting at Mid-Atlantic (MAR) during Late Cretaceous. Both display morphologic complexities that imply their tectonic evolution is incompletely understood. We studied bathymetry, gravity, vertical gravity gradient maps derived satellite altimetry to trace faults providing indications of seafloor spreading directions changes. also examined magnetic anomalies for time constraint reflection seismic data structural information. Abyssal hill fabric anomaly indicate area between RGR WR was anomalous C34 (83.6 Ma) C30 (66.4 owing reorganization right-lateral transform MAR. This event began ∼92 Ma as shifted south form multiple, short-offset transforms, with extending through ending before C30. Anomalous spacing discordant fault microplate core Cretaceous Quiet Zone seafloor. As MAR jumped eastward, this captured plate now resides mostly in basin main plateau related ridge east (East Rise). The ringed massifs, implying link volcanism. results presented here these two LIPs had complex history belies simple models.

Evolution of the Walvis Ridge-Rio Grande Rise Hot Spot System' Implications for African and South American Plate Motions Over Plumes

Crystallization ages of volcanic rocks, dredged or drilled from the Walvis Ridge (ten sites) and the Rio Grande Rise (one site), have been determined by the 40Ar/39Ar incremental heating technique. The fundamentally age-progressive distribution of these basement ages suggests a common hot spot source for volcanism on the island of Tristan da Cunha, along the Walvis Ridge and Rio Grande Rise, an...

Evidence of explosive seafloor volcanic activity from the Walvis Ridge, South Atlantic Ocean

[1] Hydrophones moored in the North Atlantic Ocean recorded a sequence of explosive, volcano-acoustic signals originated at the Walvis Ridge in the South Atlantic Ocean. 365 explosive signals were detected from the Walvis Ridge beginning 24 November 2001 continuing through March 2002. The largest swarm began on 19 December at 2329 GMT, and lasted 1.25 hrs producing 32 locatable events. Swarm lo...

Patterns and magnitude of deep sea carbonate dissolution during Eocene Thermal Maximum 2 and H2, Walvis Ridge, southeastern Atlantic Ocean

[1] Eocene Thermal Maximum 2 (ETM2 or H1; 53.7 Ma) represents a short-lived warming episode, associated with the injection of a large mass of C-depleted carbon into the ocean-atmosphere system. The mass of injected carbon, the extent of deep sea dissolution, and the amount of warming during ETM2 appear to be approximately half of those documented for the Paleocene-Eocene thermal maximum (PETM, ...

A hydrous melting and fractionation model for mid-ocean ridge basalts: Application to the Mid-Atlantic Ridge near the Azores

[1] The major element, trace element, and isotopic composition of mid-ocean ridge basalt glasses affected by the Azores hotspot are strongly correlated with H2O content of the glass. Distinguishing the relative importance of source chemistry and potential temperature in ridge-hotspot interaction therefore requires a comprehensive model that accounts for the effect of H2O in the source on meltin...
